Getting Ready for the Holidays: Etiquette Class 2013 11/20/13

 

On November 20, 2013, the Acworth Achievers attended their annual etiquette class held at Fish Thyme Restaurant in Acworth, Georgia. The achievers participated in a 2 hour class teaching them the fundamentals of formal eating. During the class, the acheivers learned proper table manners, place settings, and social activities while enjoying a 3 course meal. We would like to thank Fish Thyme for their hospitality and wonderful service.

Thank You Cobb EMC 11/18/2013

The Acworth Achievers received some incredible news!! We have been awarded a Grant from Cobb EMC. The grant funds will be used for college tours and recruitment fairs. We will visit universities/colleges located in the state of Georgia and Alabama.

The Achievers plan to visit Kennesaw State University, Georgia State University, Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, West Georgia University, Morehouse College, University of Georgia, Tuskegee University, Atlanta National College Fair, and the Honda Battle of the Bands College Expo.

With the help from Cobb EMC, the Acworth Achievers will be exposed to some great universities. Thank you Cobb EMC!

 
Creative Designer Korry Richards Pays a Special Visit 11/7/2013

       

 

 During the month of November, the Acworth Achievers welcomed Creative Designer Korry Richards to speak to them. Mr. Richards who is an Acworth, Georgia native and graduate of North Carolina State University, spoke with the achievers about strategically planning their goals for the future. Korry Richards is the Creative Designer of the Fortune 500 company, Evestment Alliance. He is also the owner of KRDZN, a boutique creative company that specializes in product marketing and branding. The Achievers worked on a reflective activity with Mr. Richards, volunteers, and staff. Halloween Activity: Cake Decorating 11/2/2013

Happy Halloween!!

On October 31, the Acworth Achievers decorated cakes Halloween style. With over 30 cakes provided by Publix Groceries, the achievers had a great time decorating their own cakes with icing and sprinkles. Creativity filled the room as the achievers created scary designs, pictures, and names on their own cake. After the activity, the kids enjoyed eating their cakes that they personalized. It was a fun filled afternoon. Special thanks to Publix Groceries and the volunteers who helped with this activity.

A special thank you goes out to Bill Watson of JRM Management and Marlon Longacre of Piedmont Church for your continuous kindness!

 

 JRM Management and Piedmont Church sent a special invitation to the Acworth Achievers to attend the North Georgia State Fair in Marietta, Georgia. It was an afternoon of fun, friends, rides and hamburgers and hotdogs! And of course the Achievers had to indulge in cotton candy, candy apples, popcorn and funnel cakes! One cannot attend the fair without a few sweets!

Congratulations to all the Acworth Achievers who are continuing to achieve and excel inside and outside the classroom! This trip was well deserved for all your hard work!

It was a fun filled night with rides and entertainment and there was something there for every Achiever to enjoy!

Achievers Battle It Out in a Game of Kickball 8/5/2013

 

Recently the Acworth Achievers decided to have a head-to- head challenge in a fierce game of kickball and bragging rights were at stake. With the best "kick-ballers" as captains, the group was divided into two teams. At first it was a lopsided game, with one team dominating the other, but soon the losing score was able to close the gap and it became a close competition. The final score was 15-13.

 
Achievers Close Out Summer With Homemade Ice Cream 8/5/2013

 

To close out the summer the Acworth Achievers decided to make their very own ice cream. With a simple vanilla ice cream recipe, that included nothing more than ice, milk, salt and vanilla extract, it turned out to be a delicious treat!  The Achievers even decided to get creative and added sprinkles and chocolate chips to make it their very own!

Achievers Attend First Ever Braves Game 7/30/2013

 

On Saturday, July 27, 2013, the Acworth Achievers were given the opportunity to see the Atlanta Braves take on the St. Louis Cardinals. The tickets were donated by the Tim Hudson Family Foundation in efforts to provide the Achievers with a new life experience. Even though the Atlanta traffic was heavy, with Braves fans in every car, there was lots of laughter and great weather that made the day an unforgettable experience.

 
The Acworth Achievers Program Honored 5/19/2013

 

The Acworth Achievers Mentoring and After School Program was recently awarded the "Torch Award" by the Marietta-Roswell Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The Torch Award is given to a single local program for "Distinguished Community Service in Educational Development". The Achievers were invited to a banquet held on May 18, where they were recognized, receiving a glass award in the shape of a torch and a standing ovation.  The program was nominated by a local resident who has seen the great work and accomplishments of the students and the program.

Achievers Take on the World's Largest Inflatable Water Slide 7/10/2013

The Acworth Achievers decided to head over to Acworth's very own Dallas Landing Park to conquer the worlds largest inflatable water slide! Standing at 36 feet tall and 175 feet long, the water slide created much excitement and laughter! From flips to cannon balls to the old fashion feet first, every achiever took on the giant slide in their own creative way!

 
Local YMCA Teams Up With the Achievers and Parks, Recreation and Community Resource Department 6/1/2013

This summer the Northwest Family YMCA has invited the Achievers over to their center every Thursday to participate in activities such as swimming, basketball and rock climbing!

The Northwest Family YMCA is also providing FREE lunch to all children and young adults, ages 0-18, Monday through Friday, noon to 1:00 PM at Acworth's Rosenwald School located at 4410 Cherokee Street, Acworth, GA 30101. This lunch program ends August 2 so there is still plenty of time to come and join! No paperwork is needed and all you have to do is show up! Achievers Team Up With Goodwill for Charity Drive 3/5/2013
   

The Acworth Achievers worked with Goodwill of North Georgia for just over month and reached their goal of filling one large donation bin with gently used shoes and clothing items! The collection will be used to help raise funds to support Goodwill's Job Training and Placement Programs which assists people with disabilities and other disadvantages.

Special thanks to Goodwill of North Georgia for their willingness to form a partnership and to all those in the Acworth community that assisted with donations.

 

Acworth Achievers Set Sights on Higher Education #COLLEGEBOUND 2/5/2013
   

Packed in the programs "family van," high school students from the Acworth Achievers made their way down to the World Congress Center in Atlanta for the National College Fair tour. Over 100 colleges and universities filled the center providing numerous post secondary educational options for the college bound visitors.

Upon returning to Acworth, program participants were excited about their bags full of life changing opportunities and already began to set their goals of which university they plan to call their alma mater!

From the Univeristy of Georgia to the University of Florida to Louisiana State University and beyong, the Acworth Achievers are now little dawgs, gators, and tigers in the making!

Achievers Honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 1/21/2013

In honor of the legendary civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., the Acworth Achievers participated in the City of Acworth's first official 'Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration', held at the Acworth City Hall. The Achievers participated in the program with a presentation and hosted a 'MLK Day of Service', something they have done for years. For this year's service they decided to plant a 'Unity Tree' surrounded by flowers, to represent Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream of "unity".

*Attention: Volunteers and Mentors are Welcome!

The Acworth Achievers Mentoring and After School Program is always in need of caring adults to volunteer or mentor at their convenience. From homework assistance to college applications to providing positive advice, responsible adults 18 years of age and older are welcome to volunteer with the program on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00pm-6:00pm at the Roberts School Community and Education Center.

All volunteers and mentors are asked to complete a simple criminal background check with the Acworth Parks, Recreation, and Community Resource Department prior to volunteering. In most cases, potential volunteers will recieve approval 24-48 hours after volunteer application has been submitted.

Achievers Spring Break in Boston, MA.


The Expanding Horizons and Acworth Achievers programs have selected participants for an all expense paid trip to Boston, Massachusetts. The group will be taking a four day trip that will consist of historical tours as well as new and innovative tours of the city. The participants will enjoy tours of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Laboratory and Museum, the Museum of Science, and Plimoth Plantation. They will also have an opportunity to visit Salem and enjoy the Salem Witch Museum. We cannot wait to explore the great city of Boston!
