The Achievers Give Back for the Holidays 12/3/15

As the holiday season approaches, the Acworth Achievers wanted to do something to give back to those in need. MUST Ministries offers several ways to get involved during the holiday season such a book drive, a drive for blankets, underwear, socks, scarves, and gloves, a toy drive, making Christmas Cards, baby boxes, and Secret Santa workshops.

The Achievers decided to do a Stocking Stuffing Activity. They filled 50 stockings with small items such as hygiene products, small toys, nail polish, toothbrushes, and Christmas cards. Each Achiever wrote a nice note to each child in need and wished them the best this holiday season. Every student left feeling good about themselves for giving back to someone in need.

Acworth Turkey Chase 2015 11/21/15

Every year, the city of Acworth partners with Tackle Hunger to put on their annual Turkey Chase 5K to raise money for a good cause as each participant is required to bring one non-perishable food item in order to get a race number. The Turkey Chase is an exhilarating 5K run though Historic Downtown Acworth and along the shores of beautiful Lake Acworth. Walk, jog, or run, participants of all ages and abilities are welcome.

This year there were over 1,000 participants from around the metro Atlanta area. The Acworth Achievers helped to stuff 1,000 bags for the race participants with items from the sponsors to prepare for the event. Several Acworth Achievers participated in the 5K and our very own Achiever placed second in his age division. What a great way to start off this year's Thanksgiving holiday!

Georgia State vs UL-L Game 11/7/15

It's football season! The Achievers took a trip to the Georgia Dome and attended the Georgia State University versus the University of Louisiana-Lafayette football game on November 7th! It was a very close game but Georgia State came up short against the Ragin' Cajuns.

For some of the Achievers, this was their very first college football game, and we had excellent seats, sitting right behind the end zone. The Achievers were not only entertained by the game but by the cheerleaders and band as well. Whether this was their first game or not, all the kids had a blast cheering for the Georgia State Panthers!

Cabela's Learning Dock 9/29/15

Cabela's sporting goods store recently made Acworth its new home a little over a year ago. When hiring their new staff, Cabela's partnered with the City of Acworth to facilitate the hiring process and used Roberts School as their home base for their interviews, training facility, etc. Cabela's wanted to pay it forward to the City of Acworth for the hospitality.

On September 29, 2015, Cabela's opened their "Learning Dock" at the Roberts School solely for the Acworth Achievers program. The room has several computers including a Mac, an iPad, a wireless printer for homework, a pontoon boat for relaxing, and two Cabela's murals painted by Cabela's very own staff. The Achievers are so excited to welcome this new addition to the program!

Achievers Help Rebuild Nepal 8/25/15

On April 25, 2015, an earthquake of 7.9 magnitude struck Nepal, their worst disaster in 80 years. The quake ended nearly 8,000 lives and damaged or destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes, schools, health facilities and infrastructure. On May 12, 2015, 7.3 aftershock caused more fatalities, landslides and destruction.

Students Rebuild and Save the Children have teamed up to support  children affected by the devastating Nepal Earthquake. They came up with the Flowers for Nepal Challenge. For each non-perishable flower garland made and mailed in, the Bezos Family Foundation will donate $2 up to $200,000 to Save the Children's relief efforts.

On Tuesday, August 25th, the Acworth Achievers were able to contribute to the relief efforts by making flower garlands to save the youth in Nepal!

On Friday, August 14, 2015, the Acworth Achievers were able to get out and have some fun! They invited by the Braves Foundation to attend the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The tickets were part of the "Reach Out, Be Our Guest" program where the Atlanta Braves themselves donate their tickets. The Achievers were also able to see John Smoltz get inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Everyone had a blast cheering for the home team and even stayed afterwards for Friday Night Fireworks.

The Acworth Achievers would like give the Reach Out Program a huge "Thank You" for providing the tickets to the game! Go Braves!

Sky Zone vs the Achievers 8/15

The Achievers continued to have a blast this summer as they made their way to Sky Zone Trampoline Park in Kennesaw, Georgia. Sky Zone is the world's first indoor trampoline park. They pride themselves in being the inventors of "fun fitness" and the maker of trampolines as far as the eye can see.

This was an awesome way for the Achievers to be active while having fun! There was a foam pit, basketball goals, dodgeball court, and free jump. Pictured are the Acworth Achievers in a game of trampoline dodgeball. They were able to compete against other organizations in a friendly manner.

The Achievers Visit Reinhardt University 7/7/15

On July 7th, the Acworth Achievers Mentoring and After School Program took a trip to the mountains for a tour of Reinhardt University. Reinhardt is a small, private institution located in the North Georgia mountains. This university was quite different from the other universities we have visited before. The size of the school was smaller than most of the Achievers' high schools, and it was a private school instead of public.

This was a good opportunity for our students to experience a different campus and begin to think about the size of the school they would like to attend. It's good to expose students to new choices that way they know what they do and do not want in a university!

Georgia State Tour 6/23/15

The Acworth Achievers continue to broaden their horizons as they keep their options open for their futures. They were able to experience a university in the big city of Atlanta when they visited Georgia State University. The tour guides really connected with the kids and had a lot of our students interested in attending this college!

We hope by exposing our students to as many colleges and universities as possible, it will get their wheels spinning about the next stage in their lives and maybe even a little excited!

Achievers Volunteer with Special Needs League 6/30/15

On Tuesday, June 30, the Acworth Achievers gave back to the community by volunteering their time with the Horizon League. The Horizon League is a special needs league that the City of Acworth offers on its very own turf field.

During the summer months, the Horizon League offers kickball to its athletes. The Achievers were fortunate enough to assist many of the special needs players and had the opportunity to broaden their own horizons.

I think it's safe to say that the Acworth Achievers had just as much fun as the athletes! Every Achiever left the field with a since of pride.

Mother's Day Project 5/7/15

On Thursday, May 7th, the Acworth Achievers had the opportunity to make their mothers a gift for Mother's Day. Their project was a flower arrangement center piece that each student had to make their own. First, they each chose the type of container to put the flowers in. Then they chose what material to put at bottom of the container to hold the flowers in place. Finally, each student chose the flowers for their arrangement. After their flowers were in the container, they were able to decorate the outside with ribbon, paint, etc. to make it their own.

The project was a huge success and each Achiever was able to bring home a gift for their mom on Mother's Day!

The Achievers Celebrate Cinco de Mayo 5/5/15
On Tuesday, May 5th, the Acworth Achievers celebrated Cinco de Mayo by making tacos at the Acworth Beach House. Our very own Achievers prepared, cooked, and served all of the food. They had hard and soft tacos with seasoned ground beef along with lettuce, cheese, and salsa as toppings and dessert as well. We even had a little Spanish music in the background to add to this festive event.

Everyone had a good time celebrating this special holiday! The Achievers always enjoy honoring and learning about different cultures! Can't wait to see what else is in store!

Visit to the 911 Call Center 4/30/15

On Thursday, April 30th, the Acworth Achievers continued their journey with the Acworth Youth Police Academy and visited the 911 call center in Kennesaw, GA. The Achievers had the opportunity to see what the call center was like and talked to an actual 911 operator.

After the 911 Call Center tour, Officer Luther of the Kennesaw Police Department took the Achievers for a tour of the evidence room, the jail, and got to see more police K-9 action as K9 Turbo showed them his skills!

A big thanks to the Kennesaw PD for allowing us to visit and to the Acworth PD for giving the Achievers this opportunity!

The K-9 Unit Visits the Achievers 4/2/15

On Thursday, April 2nd, the Acworth Police Department brought in their K-9 unit to kick-off their Youth Police Academy! Detective Arnold and Corporal Vanderberg started off with a PowerPoint presentation about drugs and alcohol and the effects they have on the body. It was a very informational presentation and the kids were very engaged!

Corporal LaRocque and Corporal Vanderberg then did a K-9 demonstration with each of their police dogs. K9 Uno demonstrated what he does when he smells the odor of drugs. Corporal Vanderberg and his German Shepard, K9 Dagg, showed the Achievers a demonstration with the bite sleeve.
