In 2006, the City of Acworth was approached by a local family and business owner who wanted to significantly change the lives of Acworth youth by making a financial contribution. From that single contribution, the City of Acworth decided to also increase its efforts investing into it's youth and dedicated staff along with additional resources to take underserved youth on all-expenses paid, educational field trips that later spawned the Expanding Horizons program. Later, in 2009, the City of Acworth and local partners felt that it was time to do even more. With the support of local leaders, additional resources were redirected to create a branch of the Expanding Horizons program called the Acworth Achievers Mentoring and After School Program.
With funding and support from the City of Acworth, Cobb County Public Schools, Cobb Success For All Students, Acworth Housing Authority, and the anonymous donor, the Acworth Achievers program has become the premier mentoring and after school program in Acworth. Partnering with local schools like Barber Middle School and North Cobb High School, students are provided transportation from school to the Roberts School Community and Education Center and taken home after the activities for the day. The Acworth Achievers received support from Philips and the Atlanta Hawks in 2012 in the form of a facility renovation. The program's meeting facility is now known as an Atlanta Hawks Reading and Learning Zone and is only the second program to receive such honors. There is NO charge to participate in Acworth Achievers Mentoring and After School Program.
In 2010, Acworth Achievers was one of three programs highlighted in the City of Acworth's crowning as the 2010 National Civic League All-America City which is one of the United States oldest and most prestigious civic awards. The other two highlighted programs in Acworth's nomination were the Horizon Field and Expanding Horizons. The All-America City award-winning presentation may be viewed in its entirety by clicking here.
The program is open to ALL students ages 8-18. Preregistration is not required but preferred.
